In this article, we will try to summarize a couple of problems that can happen on a car sunroof and provide the corresponding solutions to fix them. If you have additional questions – Auto Glass Express is here for you!

Leaky Sunroof

The first problem is commonly known as a leaky sunroof. Whether it’s dripping or gushing water, a sunroof leak can create a mess and damage your car’s interior. To solve the problem, you can follow three methods of cleaning drain tubes with air, cleaning drains with metal wire and fixing the seal. We can discuss these three methods in detail.

The first method includes cleaning the sunroof with blasting compressed air thru the drain tubes located at the base of the sunroof seal (located inside the rubber seal). To implement the second method, you can insert the skinny flexible metal wire in a drain tube, twist the wire clockwise, and then rotate counterclockwise while pushing it deeper into the drain tube, so you can close the sunroof and pour water over the glass. If the problem still exists, you can try the third method. Try to find cracks along the sunroof seal, scan the area around the seal for any pooling water or mold, apply black liquid electrical tape to the seal and close the sunroof and pour water over the top again.

Stucked Sunroof

You can try to solve the problem with the following steps. Remove the panel glass gently with a screwdriver or drill. Inspect the sunroof mechanism, check for any cracked or broken gears or components and clean out any debris or grease buildup. Turn on your car, operate the different sunroof positions and watch as the gears move, looking for problem areas. If you can’t locate the problem components, visit our auto-repair shop, and we can remove or replace the part.

Broken Glass

Flying road debris or some falling object can damage your glass. Similar to a broken windshield, a broken sunroof can detract from the appearance of your vehicle. Depending on the damage, the opening can allow dust and precipitation to enter and ruin the interior of the vehicle. Don’t drive with the broken roof, it can affect your safety and cause a distraction. Replacing the actual glass is a simple fix, cleaning up the broken glass can be time-consuming. Tempered glass (that we mentioned in a couple of articles) is created to shattered into numerous small pieces. These shards of glass can fly anywhere, including inside the sunroof’s tracks and on the lubricant that helps it slide on the tracks. This can increase labor costs because we need to locate and remove all of the small pieces before installing the new glass panel.

Motor Failure

Sunroof issues can be caused by motor failure can prevent the panel from retracting properly. Replacing the component can be very expensive.
